Today's date is:

“Now you have been freed from sin and become slaves of God.” (Romans 6.22)

Happy Independence Day. On this day in 1776 the United States declared it’s independence from England. Of course the English didn’t like this and a war ensued. From this we know that “freedom isn’t free.” There’s another freedom that’s even more important than the freedom
from a controlling king. This is freedom from
sin. The apostle Paul said “Now you have been freed from sin and become slaves of God.” (Romans 6.22)

Before you became a believer, you were bound to sin and a slave to Satan. You may not have realized this at the time, but it’s true. At the point of your, Salvation Jesus set you free from these bonds. Jesus Himself declared “If the Son sets you free, you will be absolutely free.” (John 8.36) Great! I like being free. No more pressure. What does freedom in Christ really mean? Paul said it meant becoming “slaves of God.”

We shouldn’t confuse this with the slavery that existed in the 1800’s. Paul was referring to the voluntary “bond servant” relationship that exists between a master and someone who willingly puts his or her welfare into the master’s hands. Servants did this in the past because they knew that a kind master would always take care of them no matter what.

You have been set free so serve Jesus. This is not trading one bondage for another. Satan places burden after burden on his followers while Jesus lifts our burdens. Jesus promised that He would always be with us. When we walk in the very camp of the enemy, He is there beside us.

Happy Independence Day. Have fun, enjoy
yourselves, but never forget your freedom was won for a purpose.
